ABOUT
With a vision to emerge as a center of excellence in physiology education, research, and patient care, the department has progressively upgraded its laboratories and equipment. It currently offers three academic programs, with plans for further expansion.
The department is committed to delivering high-quality education and training while also contributing to clinical services through specialized diagnostic facilities in neurophysiology and andrology. Faculty members, senior residents, and junior residents are actively involved in both teaching and patient care services.
In pursuit of innovation and collaboration, the Department of Physiology is proactively developing research and diagnostic laboratories and welcomes interdisciplinary research partnerships. It is equipped with advanced simulation tools for cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, which are utilized for student training and community health education. The department regularly conducts Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) training in collaboration with the Department of Anaesthesiology and the Medical Education Unit. A departmental library houses an extensive collection of standard reference books in physiology.
The Department of Physiology envisions significant future growth to support advanced research and academic excellence:
- Development of Advanced Research Labs
- Cardiovascular Physiology Lab
- Pulmonary Function Lab and Diagnostics
- Metabolic Physiology Lab
- Neurophysiology Research Lab
- Sports and Exercise Physiology Lab
- Space Physiology Research Unit
- Gastrophysiology Lab (in collaboration with the Department of Gastroenterology)
- Animal Research Facility – A fully functional animal research lab is being planned to facilitate translational research in basic and applied physiology.
- Launch of Superspecialty Programs (DM/MCh) – Proposed advanced courses aligned with national needs and global standards.
- Expansion of Telemedicine Services – Integration with existing infrastructure to enhance outreach and remote patient care.
- Collaborative Research Initiatives – Active efforts are underway to establish partnerships with institutions of national importance and globally recognized universities and research centers.
Currently Available Services
Outpatient and Inpatient Services
- Currently, the department is not offering direct OPD/IPD services.
Specialty Diagnostic Clinics
- The department contributes to specialized services in collaboration with clinical departments.
Diagnostic Facilities
The Department of Physiology currently provides a range of neurophysiological and andrological diagnostic tests, including:
- Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV)
- Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA)
- Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP)
- Electromyography (EMG)
- Evoked Potentials (EP)
- Semen Analysis
Medical Education and Training
The department plays a pivotal role in academic programs at multiple levels:
- MBBS Program – Core teaching of physiology using integrated and interactive methods.
- MSc (Medical Physiology) – Includes hands-on dissertation work in the Neurophysiology Laboratory.
- MD Physiology – Launched in January 2024 with an annual intake of two students.
- BSc (Hons.) Nursing – Physiology instruction in collaboration with the College of Nursing.
The department is fully equipped with modern teaching tools, simulation labs, and infrastructure to support both undergraduate and postgraduate education. Plans are underway to initiate a PhD program in Physiology in the near future.
Community Outreach
With a commitment to “Health for All”, the department aims to organize regular community engagement programs focused on promoting healthy lifestyles among the public. Targeted outreach initiatives are planned for schools, rural communities, and high-risk populations to enhance awareness about physiological health and preventive care.
