About the Department
The Department of Community and Family Medicine (CFM) at AIIMS Gorakhpur was established in 2019 with the mandate to strengthen preventive, promotive, and primary healthcare services in the region.
The department plays a pivotal role in undergraduate medical education, capacity building of healthcare workers, community-based research, and the delivery of comprehensive primary care through its Urban and Rural Health Training Centres.

1. Teaching and Training
A. Rural Health Training Centres
The department is dedicated to providing a wide array of health services and educational programs at the Rural Health Training Centres (RHTC) located in Shivpur and Dumari Khas. The key initiatives include:
- OPD Services: Training interns and offering regular medical care and consultations for the community (Daily in Dumari Khas and thrice weekly in Shivpur).
- Training of Community Health Workers: Educating ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, ANMs, and other peripheral health workers on diverse health topics to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
- Counselling and Health Education: Providing patients with health education and necessary referrals to specialized care.
- School Health Programs: Conducting health assessments and educational activities in schools.
- Monitoring of Village Health and Nutrition Days (VHND): Ensuring effective delivery of health and nutrition services during these sessions.
- Health Talk Sessions: Conducting discussions aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle practices.
- Health Day Celebrations: Organizing events to increase awareness of specific health issues.
- Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems: Carrying out ongoing data collection to aid in health planning and policy-making.
B. Urban Health Training Centre, Jharnatola
Since June 1, 2022, this Jharnatola center has been an important site for training undergraduate medical students, who engage in family case studies and short projects during their rotations.
- OPD Services: The Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) has enhanced its operations by training interns and expanding its services to three days a week, significantly improving healthcare accessibility for urban residents.
- Training of Community Health Workers: Educating ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, ANMs, and other peripheral health workers on diverse health topics to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
- Counselling and Health Education: Providing patients with health education and necessary referrals to specialized care.

2. Clinical Services
The Rural Health Training Centres at Dumari Khas and Shivpur are pivotal in delivering healthcare services to rural communities. Significant services include:
A. Family Medicine Outpatient Department (OPD)
Located in Rooms 214 and 215, these departments have been providing continuous patient care and health education since October 2019, now accommodating over 110 patients daily.
B. OPD Services
- Rural Health Training Centre: Offering regular medical care and consultations for the community.
- Urban Health Training Centre, Jharnatola: The UHTC has expanded its services to operate three days a week, thereby increasing healthcare accessibility for urban residents.
C. Vaccination Services
The department has broadened its vaccination services with:
- Routine Immunizations in Model Immunization Centre: We have developed the first Model Immunization Centre of Uttar Pradesh state in 2022 and working as a centre of excellence since then. Located in Rooms 146 and 147, these clinics provide routine vaccinations for children and pregnant women along with nutritional guidance (Model Immunization Centre 2024-25 - <1 yr- 6055 , >1yr - 1447, Pregnant - 1679, Total – 9181).
- Yellow Fever Vaccinations: The Yellow Fever vaccination Centre in Room No: 7, AYUSH Block is functional for two days per week and currently provides vaccination services for 60-80 beneficiaries per week.
- Anti-Rabies Vaccinations: Providing vaccinations to prevent rabies infections in Shivpur (RHTC).
Courses Offered

MD (Community Medicine) – A total of 7 PG students are enrolled in MD (Community Medicine).
They receive daily teaching and are required to present a seminar and a journal club each week under the supervision of a faculty member.
They are trained in family medicine, primary health care, and immunization.
Students are also posted at different levels of health care centres for firsthand exposure and get opportunities to visit various centres of public health importance. -
MD (Family Medicine) – The division of MD Family Medicine has enrolled 3 students.
In addition to their postings in other departments (e.g., Medicine and allied, Surgery and allied, OBGY, and Pediatrics),
they receive daily teaching in CFM and must present a seminar and a journal club each week under faculty supervision.
They are also trained in family medicine, primary health care, and immunization.
FUTURE VISION
To become a role model and a referral Centre of Orthopaedics, with excellence in patient care, education and Orthopaedic research.
