About the Department
Department of General Surgery is committed to provide the highest quality of medical care to patients, world class education for students and continuing innovative basic science and clinical research. It is one of the first departments to start its OPD services from the very first day AIIMS Gorakhpur started functioning in February 2019. AIIMS Gorakhpur caters to a large population of Purvanchal part of Uttar Pradesh, adjoining area of Bihar, and Nepal, most of the surgical cases reach the Surgery OPD making it one of the busiest amongst all the clinical departments. OPD started with about 50 patients per day in March 2019 and crossed 200 patients per day within a year, presently the OPD caters to more than 400-500 patients per day.
Currently department is running OPD services daily from 9-5 pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturday 9-1 pm. Two specialty clinics are run by the department, Breast clinic on every Tuesday from 2-4 pm (30-40 patients) and GI surgery clinic on every Friday from 2-4 pm (20-30 patients). Department of Surgery has an IPD of 90 beds (60+30 specialty beds*) with Male and Female surgery wards separately. Department also manages Surgical ICU of 15 beds for critical surgical cases. In the OT complex of 14 OTs, Two Modular Operation theatres daily are dedicated for the department of General Surgery. One OT is for Laparoscopy surgery cases and another for Open surgical cases. Emergency surgical cases are also managed by the department of Surgery (24*7 Daily) thus filling all the beds most of the time.
Main objectives are to create an excellent academic and education milieu for providing a platform for development of quality services, teaching and research. We aim to achieve an epitome of quality in medical education delivering and training system and to render quality patient care.
Currently Available Services
- (OPD) Outpatient Services – Currently, the department is running OPD services daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The OPD caters to more than 400–500 patients per day. OPD appointments can be booked online as well as by physically reaching the registration counters.
- (IPD) Inpatient Services – The Department of Surgery has an IPD of 90 beds (60+30 specialty beds*) with separate male and female surgery wards. The department also manages the Surgical ICU (SICU) with 15 beds for critical surgical cases.
- Specialty Clinics – Two specialty clinics are run by the department:
- Breast Clinic – Every Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (30–40 patients)
- GI Surgery Clinic – Every Friday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (20–30 patients)
- Diagnostic Services –
- Endoscopies: Diagnostic Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy have been done by the Department of Surgery for over a year, with more than 500 cases completed.
- Therapeutic procedures such as variceal banding, sclerotherapy, clip ligation, and foreign body removal are routinely performed.
- Major Surgeries –
- All major GI surgeries like Whipple’s, Radical Gastrectomy, and Colectomies.
- Basic & advanced laparoscopic surgeries including Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Laparoscopic Hernia repair (TEP, TAPP, IPOM), and Laparoscopic Appendectomy.
- Urology procedures such as Nephrectomies, Pyelolithotomies, TURP, TURBT, AV Fistulas.
- Pediatric surgeries, plastic surgeries, and other complex surgical procedures.
- Research & Publications – Many intra- and extramural projects are ongoing, and the department has published more than 50 papers in the past 5 years.
Courses Offered
Teaching:
First undergraduate batch of 50 students joined in August 2019 and revised MBBS curriculum was initiated under the guidance of mentor institute AIIMS Jodhpur. Early clinical exposure for the first MBBS batch was initiated and the students were sent to OPD in batches for clinical teaching. Integrated teaching schedules were started in which faculty of surgery started taking lectures on related topics of integration with Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry. Now two batches have already passed the Final exams. (2019 of 50 students and 2020 of 125 students).
MS in General Surgery started from July 2023 with an intake of Four students per session (Jan & July), making it Eight MS students per year. At present the strength of Academic JRs is 20. Eight seats of Senior Residents are already approved which are rotating in the department as per the working.
Regular PG meets, Mortality Meets, Census Presentations, Case discussions, Seminars, Journal Club Presentation, and Thesis Review are carried out as a routine at least twice weekly.
Research
- Many Intra and Extramural Projects are ongoing and more than 50 publications have been done by the department in past five years from the work carried out by the department in the form of Original Articles, Case Reports, Case Series, etc., in many National & International PubMed Journals.
- Many Thesis/Dissertations are regularly ongoing in the department in the form of Randomized Control Trials, Observational Studies, and other clinical studies.
- Faculty members & PG students regularly participate in various National & International conferences and present papers & posters on the work done at AIIMS Gorakhpur.
Workshop/ CME and Other Activities
Recent Activities Held
- Hands-on workshop on “Science of Energy & Stapling Devices” organized by the department of General Surgery on 29th March 2025.
- 3 days hands-on “Workshop on Laparoscopic Suturing & Knotting” in JJIW from April 1-3, 2025, with over 500 participants.
- Breast Cancer Awareness week organized by the department in Feb 2025.
- Every year the department organizes 6-8 CME, Workshop, Awareness Programs since last 4-5 years.
Upcoming Activities/Programs
- Lasers in Surgery – Live demonstration in Varicose Veins planned on August 20th 2025.
- CME on “Pancreatic Cancers” planned in Oct 2025.
- FMAS planned in Nov/Dec 2025.
- UPASICON 2026 planned on Oct 2-5 2026 at AIIMS Gorakhpur.
FUTURE VISION
The department is planning to start speciality clinics, IPD and Emergency services by the year end. All the major and laparoscopic surgeries will start simultaneously. Department plans to start post-graduation courses (MS) in General Surgery on completion of three years OR as soon as permission is granted. The department’s futuristic plans include procurement of laparoscopic simulators, a well-established skill lab and to start robotic and bariatric surgeries. This incorporation and implementation of newer technology in teaching, learning and evaluation will result in making of globally competitive, competent and confident surgeons, who will engage in ethical practice of the science and art of surgery.
With a vision of becoming world-class leading institution, department of surgery promises to professionally train both undergraduate and postgraduate students with highest quality of skill through innovative and methodological teaching in most sophisticated and modest way.
