About the Department

The Department of Ophthalmology at AIIMS Gorakhpur is dedicated to addressing the ophthalmic healthcare needs of patients from Gorakhpur and neighboring areas. Since its inception in 2019, the department has been providing outpatient services focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and research of various eye disorders.

The department strives to offer high-quality, inclusive eye care to all sections of society. It is actively involved in the teaching and training of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and engages in interdisciplinary research in collaboration with other departments of the institute.

Vision: To establish a center of excellence in comprehensive eye care, delivering services of the highest standards. The department is aligned with the objectives of the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) and is actively working towards the goal of “Eye Health for All” by conducting community outreach programs, school screening camps, and rural eye health initiatives.

Currently Available Services

Outpatient (OPD) Services

The department handles over 350 patients daily through its OPD services.
Timings:
Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Inpatient (IPD) & Surgical Services

  • Routine cataract surgeries using premium IOLs such as EDOF, Trifocal, and Toric lenses via phacoemulsification and other techniques.
  • Strabismus and paediatric cataract surgeries.
  • Comprehensive glaucoma management: pharmacotherapy, laser, and surgical interventions.
  • Medical Retina Unit: OCT, FFA, lasers, and intravitreal injections conducted regularly.
  • Oculoplastic Unit: Ptosis correction, external DCR, blepharoplasty, entropion & ectropion surgeries, and Botox injections.
  • Minor procedures: Chalazion I&C, foreign body removal, cyst and wart excision.

  • State-of-the-art modular OT for both major and minor surgeries
  • Phacoemulsification systems: Alcon Centurion
  • Operating microscope: Zeiss Lumera 700 with Callisto
  • Advanced equipment: Cyclo-cryotherapy unit
  • Corneal Transplantation: Department approved for corneal transplantation since 2 August 2024
