The field of pathology forms one of the important pillars of modern medicine. It links the understanding of basic sciences with that of clinical presentations in diseases. The Department of Pathology at AIIMS plays a pivotal role in advancing patient care, education, and research by uncovering the fundamental mechanisms of disease. Since its inception in March 2020, the department has grown into a vibrant center of diagnostic excellence and academic strength—bridging basic medical sciences with clinical practice.

At present, the department encompasses several specialized laboratory sections, including: Histopathology, Cytopathology, Hematopathology, Clinical Pathology. Each section is equipped with top-tier diagnostic equipments and is actively engaged in delivering high- quality diagnostic services, contributing to critical clinical decision-making. Automation in pathology has been significantly enhanced with the installation of fully automated hematology analyzers, coagulation systems, urine analyzers, and HPLC platforms, ensuring precision and efficiency in testing.

The department provides 24/7 emergency pathology services through the Central Pathology Laboratory, supporting uninterrupted care for critically ill patients.

Key highlights of the department’s infrastructure and services include:

• A dedicated Coagulation Laboratory with facilities for factor assays.
• Specialized screening for thalassemias and other hemoglobinopathies.
• Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration
• Fully functional Fine needle/impression/USG and exfoliative cytology lab along with body fluids and cell blocks preparation
• Histopathology with immunohistochemistry

Academic Excellence & Training

The Department of Pathology is deeply committed to medical education, offering training across multiple academic programs, including: MBBS, MD in Pathology, Bsc MLT and BSc Nursing. In collaboration with various clinical departments, all divisions actively participate in teaching, training, workshops and hands-on diagnostic exposure for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department runs an extensive and interactive academic program that includes: Lectures & Tutorials, Journal Clubs & Seminars, Group Discussions & Case- Based Learning, Pathology Slide Discussions, Clinicopathologic Conferences (CPCs) and Regular Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions.

FACILITIES

Hospital Services :-

The department of Pathology is committed to provide full support of diagnostic services with emphasis on quality assurance in a safe and environment friendly manner. The diagnostic specialities include hematology, clinical pathology, immunopathology, cytopathology and histopathology services. The equipment procurement is underway to enable and enhance the lab facilities.

The department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine continues to work towards achieving the goal of being the centre of excellence in fields of diagnostic services, medical education and research. New instruments are being procured and installed to build up such a capacity.

The Cytopathology lab continues to expand the scope of diagnostic and research services. More than 350 fine needle aspiration cytopathology examinations were performed in year 2021.

The Hematology lab was started last year with initiation of General blood picture and Bone marrow examinations. We do look forward to providing full complement of hematology and coagulation services as early as possible.

The Student lab is in process of upgradation with ongoing addition of modular lab furniture

Education :-

An exhaustive undergraduate curriculum has been designed for MBBS students. Innovative teaching methods, like integrated teaching, problem based learning, case based learning, are employed apart from didactic lectures. Student laboratory and demonstration rooms are being set up to facilitate acquiring hands-on skill. Clinical laboratory rotations will orient the students and help them acquire clinical acumen.
A museum is being equipped to highlight and reinforce the concepts of pathology. Regular Clinico-pathological case discussions and clinical grand rounds are being performed since July,2020.

Research :-

The Faculty and students are encouraged to initiate and participate in various projects and programs. The department provides for opportunities of capacity development for staff and students to enhance their skills and to foster research environment.

5. To provide platform for dissemination of knowledge and awareness of health and disease in the community.

department also strives to foster a culture of innovation, research, and academic excellence.
Our faculty and technical teams are actively involved in translational research, pushing the
boundaries of diagnostic science. The Department of Pathology envisions becoming a nationally recognized center of excellence, contributing meaningfully to healthcare through
quality diagnostics, impactful teaching, and cutting-edge research.
