Pharmacology And Therapeutics

About the Department

The Department of Pharmacology at AIIMS Gorakhpur was established in 2020.
It plays a crucial role in imparting medical education, providing clinical services, and conducting
cutting-edge research. The department is committed to fostering excellence in Pharmacology education
for undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a clear focus on promoting rational prescribing
practices and the ethical use of medicines for the betterment of patient care and society.

Students are trained in drug properties and therapeutic applications through methods that
replace animal experimentation, thereby promoting animal welfare. The department emphasizes vigilance
in drug safety, encouraging spontaneous reporting of adverse drug reactions (Pharmacovigilance)
during clinical postings. It also monitors and evaluates adverse events or untoward incidents associated
with the use of medical devices to improve patient safety under the Materiovigilance Programme.

The department has implemented enhanced pharmacology teaching through interactive and
technology-driven methods such as Computer Assisted Learning (CAL), pharmacology quizzes,
case-based and problem-based learning, and self-directed learning. It also integrates
Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) with innovative assessment tools including
multisource feedback, logbooks, reflective writing, Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE),
and structured viva voce.

Continuous curriculum innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthening
pharmacovigilance and rational drug use programs remain key priorities. The department also strives to
promote rational prescribing practices among healthcare stakeholders, especially prescribers. In addition,
it fosters a culture of research, regularly organizes workshops and conferences, and contributes to
advancing medical education in the service of human health.
