Microbiology

About the Department

The Department of Microbiology is managed by a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members, supported by well-trained laboratory technicians.
The department is fully committed to providing advanced teaching, training, and diagnostic services, fostering a conducive environment for high-quality research,
and enhancing the skills of paramedical staff in alignment with the vision and mission of the Institute.

Currently Available Services

  • Clinical laboratory as part of the Central Laboratory, equipped with automated diagnostic facilities for Bacteriology, Serology, Virology, Immunology, Parasitology, Mycology, and Mycobacteriology.
  • Designated Molecular (RT-PCR) Laboratory providing essential molecular diagnostic services.
  • Participation in HIV Testing Programme (ICTC) of Government of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Participation in TB Control Programme (RNTCP) of Government of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Participation in IDSP and MNY programmes of Government of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Active role in Hospital Infection Prevention & Control Programme and in the Antibiotic Stewardship Programme of the Institute.
  • Participation in EQAS programmes conducted by national bodies such as the Indian Association of Medical Microbiology, Indian Association of Tropical Parasitology, and PGIMER Chandigarh etc.
  • Diagnostic support to public health surveillance and outbreak investigation teams.
  • Guidance and training to postgraduate students, interns, and laboratory staff in specialized microbiological techniques.

Courses Offered

Undergraduate (UG) Teaching

  • Interactive lectures, small-group discussions, tutorials, self-directed learning, seminars, integrated teaching, demonstrations, and practical sessions in microbiology.
  • Curriculum designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the natural history of infectious diseases, including etiology, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control.
  • Periodic formative and summative assessments conducted as per institutional and competency-based medical education guidelines.
  • Visits to the departmental museum, hospital wards, and interactive bedside tutorials to understand infectious disease processes of national importance.
  • Integrated teaching sessions in collaboration with clinical departments to correlate microbiological concepts with clinical applications.

Postgraduate (PG) Teaching

  • Advanced training in diagnostic microbiology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular diagnostics, and specialized culture techniques.
  • Participation in hospital infection control activities, antimicrobial stewardship, and outbreak investigation.
  • Journal clubs, seminars, group discussion, exercises, case discussions, and research methodology workshops to enhance academic and research skills.
  • Hands-on training in advanced laboratory techniques, biosafety practices, and interpretation of complex laboratory results.
  • Involvement in departmental research projects, paper/poster presentations, and publication writing.
  • Interdisciplinary teaching and collaborative academic activities with other medical and allied health departments.

Research

The department undertakes research in infectious disease epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, hospital infection control, molecular diagnostics, and emerging pathogens.
Faculty and students publish in reputed national and international journals and collaborate with regional and national institutions.
The department is involved in intramural and extramural projects funded by ICMR and DHR, with emphasis on translational research, public health surveillance, and innovative diagnostics to improve patient care.
