Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy

About the Department

The Department of Dermatology & Venereology at AIIMS Gorakhpur started providing patient care in February 2019 with its first faculty member,
Dr. Sunil Kumar Gupta. Later, Dr. Shiwangi Rana joined in October 2022.
Since then, the department has steadily progressed, expanded, and diversified its activities in terms of patient care, education, research, and teaching.

The Dermatology Department at AIIMS Gorakhpur provides state-of-the-art facilities for the comprehensive management of various dermatological ailments
and aesthetic concerns. The department is committed to its vision, mission, and objectives of delivering excellence in clinical care,
advancing dermatological research, and providing quality medical education.

Currently Available Services

Outpatient (OPD) and Inpatient (IPD) Services

The Dermatology OPD caters to an average of 400 patients daily, making it one of the busiest OPDs in the hospital.
It provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for a wide spectrum of dermatological conditions.

The Department of Dermatology has a dedicated 15-bedded Dermatology Ward that offers comprehensive inpatient care
for patients requiring hospitalization. The ward caters to a wide range of dermatological conditions that necessitate
close monitoring, intensive treatment, or procedural interventions.

Specialty Clinics

The department runs dedicated specialty clinics on specific days of the week to ensure focused and expert care:

  • Monday: Autoimmune Blistering Diseases Clinic
  • Tuesday: Leprosy Clinic
  • Wednesday: Vitiligo Clinic
  • Thursday: Psoriasis Clinic
  • Friday: STD and Leprosy Clinic

LASER Facility

The department is equipped with an advanced LASER unit, offering the following services:

  • Nd:YAG LASER – for pigmentary lesions, hair reduction, and skin rejuvenation
  • CO₂ LASER – for ablative procedures, scars, and skin resurfacing
  • Diode LASER – primarily for hair reduction and certain vascular indications
  • Excimer LASER – for localized treatment of vitiligo and psoriasis, particularly in resistant or cosmetically sensitive areas

Phototherapy Facility

The department provides modern phototherapy services, including a
Whole-body Narrow Band UVB (NBUVB) Chamber for the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo, and other chronic dermatoses.

Dermatology Procedures and Dermatosurgery Facilities

The Department of Dermatology is well-equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure for performing a wide range of
dermatological and dermatosurgical procedures, offering both therapeutic and cosmetic care.
Key facilities include:

  • Vitiligo Surgery – Non-Cultured Melanocyte Transfer (NCMT), Suction Blister Grafting (SBG), Mini Punch Grafting (MPG), Split-Thickness Skin Grafting (STSG)
  • Hair Restoration Surgery – Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) for androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss
  • Scar Revision Surgeries – Surgical and non-surgical management of post-acne scars, traumatic scars, and keloids (including excision, subcision, and LASER-assisted methods)
  • Nail Surgery – Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as nail biopsy, nail avulsion, and treatment of ingrown nails and nail tumors
  • PRP and PRF Therapy – Regenerative procedures for androgenetic alopecia, acne scars, and skin rejuvenation
  • Other Procedures: Microneedling, Immunotherapy, Chemical Peeling, Electrocautery, Radiofrequency Surgery, Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC), Minor Procedures (paring, milia extirpation, comedone extraction, sclerotherapy, electrolysis, Intramatrix injection, biopsies, and needling)

Diagnostic Services

The department offers a range of diagnostic tests, including:
KOH Mount, Gram Stain, Tzanck Smear, ZN Staining, Touch Smear, and Wood’s Lamp Examination.

Courses Offered

The department currently offers MD in Dermatology.
In the near future, we are planning to introduce fellowship programs in the following specialized areas:

  • Community Dermatology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Pediatric Dermatology

  • Start Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology, Psychodermatology & Dermatopathology

  • Start Dermatosurgery (Vitiligo surgery, Nail surgery, Hair transplantation, Scar revision)
  • Start Laser, Botox and Aesthetic procedures

Dermatology
