Anaesthesiology

Department of Anaesthesiology, Pain Medicine & Critical Care

The Department of Anaesthesiology, Pain Medicine & Critical Care at AIIMS Gorakhpur is a vital clinical and academic unit, offering comprehensive services in perioperative anaesthesia, critical care, and pain management. The department was established in the year 2020, starting with one OT in the Ayush block for providing Day Care Anaesthesia services.

Currently, the department supports 14 modern modular operation theatres across a wide range of surgical specialties, routinely handling high-risk and complex cases, including paediatric and cancer surgeries. A 12-bedded Anaesthesia Critical Care Unit (ACCU), soon expanding to 16 beds, provides advanced intensive care through a closed ICU model.

Emergency anaesthesia services are available round-the-clock, ensuring prompt response for trauma and urgent surgical needs. The department also runs a dedicated Pain Clinic twice a week and performs ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided interventional pain procedures on designated days.

Academically, the department offers an MD Anaesthesiology program (4 seats every 6 months) and a nationally recognized DM in Pain Medicine. Upcoming post-doctoral fellowships will further enhance specialization in fields like Regional Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Paediatric Anaesthesia, and Onco-Anaesthesia. Skill development through hands-on workshops, simulation training, and certification courses in BLS and ACLS is an integral part of the curriculum.

With active engagement in clinical research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to quality care and education, the department strives to be a national leader in anaesthesia, pain medicine, and critical care.

Clinical Services

Pre-Anaesthetic Evaluation (PAC) Services

A dedicated Pre-Anaesthetic Check-up (PAC) clinic functions daily, six days a week, evaluating approximately 50–70 patients for elective and emergency procedures. The clinic ensures optimal preoperative preparation, risk stratification, and perioperative planning across a wide range of surgical disciplines.

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)
  • Paediatric Surgery
  • Oncosurgery
  • Pulmonary Medicine (Bronchoscopy)
  • Psychiatry (Electroconvulsive Therapy)
  • Gastroenterology (ERCP and Endoscopy)

High-risk and complex surgical cases, including onco-surgical and paediatric procedures, are routinely managed. Expansion into super-specialty operation theatres is currently underway.

Emergency Anaesthesia Services

A dedicated anaesthesia team provides 24×7 emergency support, ensuring prompt and expert management of obstetric cases, trauma cases, emergency surgeries, and critically ill patients.

Anaesthesia Critical Care Unit (ACCU)

The department oversees a state-of-the-art 12-bedded Intensive Care Unit, functioning under a closed ICU model. The unit is equipped with:

  • Advanced ventilatory support
  • Invasive haemodynamic monitoring
  • Comprehensive multi-organ support

Plans are in place to expand ICU capacity to 16 beds in the near future.

Pain Medicine Services
