Community Medicine & Family Medicine

INTRODUCTION

Department of Community Medicine & Family Medicine is based on three principles which laid down the concept of AIIMS;

  1. Teaching: producing community oriented, patient centered future health care providers,
  2. Research: for innovation in the health programs,
  3. Service: providing evidence based public health interventions to the community. Department is also committed to provide preventive, promotive and curative model care at the primary care level.

In this process the department has already established the Rural health training center at Village Dumari Khas and Shivpur in Sardar Nagar and Khorabar Block respectively with the help of the District Health System. These centers are providing promotive, curative and preventive care to the patients. Department is also in process of developing the Model Urban Health Training Centre at PHC Jharnatola.

In the AIIMS premises also department is providing the Preventive Services by providing immunization Services to the pregnant women and under-five children under national immunization schedule. Department is planning to open a Yellow Fever Vaccination center which will help international travelers in this region. Curative services are also being provided by treating patients at Family Medicine OPD.

Department also envisages to develop a Model Research Training Center (MRTC), Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS) for developing the concept of community based participatory research which will fuel the Evidence Based Care in the community.

Apart from this the department is also involved in strengthening Village Health Sanitation Nutrition Sessions & Capacity building of the grass root level workers ASHA, Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and Medical Officers.

Family Medicine OPD
Department of Community Medicine and Family Medicine is providing OPD services, health education since Oct 2019. Currently OPD number crosses 100 patients per day.

Vaccination services
Department is also providing Vaccination services. Currently giving routine immunization for children and pregnant women. Planning for Yellow fever Vaccination and adult immunization is also under process.

Rural Health Training Centres

Department is providing following health services at RHTC Shivpur and Dumari Khas.

1. OPD services
2. Counselling, health education and referral services.
3. Training of peripheral health workers e.g. ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, ANM etc over different health issues.
4. School health services
5. Anti Rabies vaccination
6. Monitoring of VHND session
7. Demographic survey is ongoing

9. Health talk session
10. Specialist OPD services OBGY

We are also planning for student's rural field visits, deaddiction centre, community based research etc.

Urban Health Training Centre, Jharnatola
Department is also planning to develope Urban PHC Jharna Tola into Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC). In catchment area of Urban PHC, teaching to the undergraduate medical students is going on since 1st June, 2022 where they take cases in families and complete a short project during their posting. The centre is planned to be developed as a model urban centre for teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, training of health care workers and for conducting community based research among the urban vulnerable populations.

Services in Vantangia
Vantangia community is very underprivileged and marginalised population spread in 4-5 groups in jungle around Gorakhpur city. Their living standards and health indicators are poor.  Department has conducted many health camps giving services of screening for various diseases, health education, health awareness etc.

GOALS

To develop a model comprehensive and holistic primary health care services replicable at national level.

OBJECTIVES :-

  1. To train undergraduate and post graduate medical students in community oriented medical education
  2. To create role model centre for promotive, preventive and curative services
  3. To conduct research addressing national health priorities and to generate evidence for program and policy formulation
  4. To facilitate the implementation of national health programmes at local, state, and national level

FUTURE VISION

  1. To develop the centre for excellence in teaching, population based research in this region of India
  2. To develop a centre for Excellence in the research in Vector borne Diseases
  3. To develop a centre for Excellence in Population Based Cancer Research
  4. To establishes School of Public Health in collaboration with reputed universities across the world
