About the Department
The Department of Anatomy at AIIMS Gorakhpur was established in August 2019 as one of the first few departments on the ground floor of the Academic Block, beginning with four founder faculty members. It is steadily expanding into a state-of-the-art centre for medical education, skill training, and research, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care.
The department aims to provide a strong foundation in anatomical sciences, which is essential for all health science disciplines. Through the integration of modern teaching methodologies, laboratory training, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovative research, it fosters a deep understanding of human anatomy for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, while also enhancing the surgical skills of clinicians.
A competency-based curriculum has been developed for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, ensuring high-quality education, training, and research aligned with national standards. The department actively imparts clinically relevant anatomical knowledge to residents across various clinical and para-clinical disciplines.
It is committed to delivering integrated teaching, early clinical exposure, skill training through cadaveric and virtual dissections, and facilitating patient care using a PACS-based real-life size image visualizer. The department also houses a well-equipped bone bank, serving as a valuable resource for MBBS and postgraduate students in osteology.
The department is engaged in multidisciplinary research in collaboration with various departments within AIIMS and other premier institutes, especially in the areas of cytogenetics, embryology and fetal studies, dysmorphology, histology, and other clinical conditions.
Vision for Future Growth
- To develop a dedicated Advanced Cadaveric Skill Lab for refining clinical and surgical skills of clinicians and students.
- To establish a Cytogenetics Lab with FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) for diagnostics and genetic research.
- To set up a Fetal Lab with academic fetal autopsy for diagnostic, educational, and research purposes.
- To develop a Histology Research Lab with facilities for special staining and immunohistochemistry.
- To create a facility for preparing 3D anatomical models using patient CT and MRI data, aiding in surgical planning and patient management.
Infrastructure
The Department has well-established laboratories comparable to other Institutes of National Repute, ensuring excellence in academics, training, and research outcomes. Facilities include:
- Dissection Lab with cadaver storage facility
- Clinical Anatomy Lab with virtual dissection technology
- Clinical Skill Lab
- Histology Lab
- Anatomy Museum featuring:
- Embryology models
- Gross Anatomy models
- Gross and Microscopic Anatomy section displays
- Departmental Library
- Demonstration Rooms equipped with audio-visual aids and projection facilities
The department actively participates in academic programmes for MBBS, MSc Anatomy, MD Anatomy, PhD, and allied health courses. It regularly organizes and collaborates in hands-on cadaveric workshops and skill training sessions with the Surgery, ENT, and other clinical departments.
Mandatory training modules are implemented for students and staff in:
- Instrument handling
- Biomedical Waste (BMW) management and segregation
- Hand hygiene practices
Additionally, the department provides bone banking facilities as a valuable academic resource for medical students.
Available Facilities
-
Embalming Facility
- Routine embalming for teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Soft embalming for conducting cadaveric hands-on workshops -
Body Donation Programme
- A voluntary programme through which the department receives donated bodies for academic and research purposes
- Any individual can pledge to donate their body after death to AIIMS Gorakhpur -
Community Outreach
- Public awareness campaigns through media releases and lectures on body donation
- Volunteers can pledge for body donation under this campaign
- Pledge forms and FAQs are available here:
