About the Department
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at AIIMS Gorakhpur was established in January 2020 with the primary objective of integrating legal knowledge into medical education and professional practice. The department is committed to imparting structured teaching and hands-on training to MBBS and Nursing students in the areas of forensic medicine, medical jurisprudence, and toxicology. This prepares future medical and paramedical professionals to perform their medico-legal responsibilities with competence, integrity, and adherence to legal protocols.
In addition to academic instruction, the department plays an active clinical role by handling medico-legal work in the Trauma and Emergency Department of the institute. It provides essential support in the examination, documentation, and legal handling of cases, while also guiding other doctors across departments on medico-legal procedures and best practices. This ensures consistency, accuracy, and legal compliance in the management of such cases.
A significant milestone in the department’s growth has been the initiation of medico-legal autopsies. These are conducted in accordance with statutory requirements and play a vital role in determining the cause, manner, and circumstances of death. The findings assist law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in the fair delivery of justice.
The department also offers expert forensic consultation to investigating agencies and judicial bodies, thereby contributing to the broader legal system. With its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology continues to strengthen the medico-legal framework and uphold the intersection of medicine, ethics, and law.
