Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

About the Department

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at AIIMS Gorakhpur began its journey in March 2020 with the joining of its first faculty member. The department initially started with Outpatient Department (OPD) services, followed by the commencement of Inpatient Department (IPD) services on September 1, 2022. Since then, it has steadily expanded, guided by a strong commitment to providing high-quality patient care.

In 2024, the department launched a dedicated Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU), enhancing its capacity to deliver critical care services to patients in need. It is now fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, including:

  • Latest model convex probe EBUS
  • Video bronchoscope
  • Fiberoptic bronchoscope
  • Semirigid thoracoscope
  • Portable ultrasound machine
  • Polysomnography machine
  • Spirometry
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) equipment

The department launched its DM program in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine in July 2024, marking a significant academic milestone. It has since grown into a vital referral center for respiratory diseases, catering to patients not only from Eastern Uttar Pradesh but also from neighboring Bihar and even border areas of Nepal.

In addition to clinical excellence, the department is actively involved in research with multiple ongoing projects, including several intramural studies and three extramural projects.

Vision & Mission: We aspire to be among the leading centers of excellence in pulmonology in India—renowned for patient care, cutting-edge research, and world-class academic programs. Our mission is to develop into a state-of-the-art center for interventional pulmonology, offering innovative and effective treatments that make a tangible difference in the lives of our patients.
