ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT 

The foundation of the department was laid by our dynamic Executive Director & CEO Maj. Gen. (Dr) Vibha Dutta where she wanted to start Super-speciality departments with immediate effect at AIIMS, Gorakhpur. In the first Neurosurgery faculty recruitment done in August, 2025; three neurosurgeons were selected namely Dr Niraj Kanaujia as Additional Professor, Dr Sarthak Mehta & Dr Devendra Kumar as Assistant Professors. They joined the department and the department became fully functional from January 2026. In the second round of recruitment Dr Ninad Anand Sawant joined as Associate Professor.  

The Department of Neurosurgery at AIIMS, Gorakhpur will provide Safe, Effective, Patient-centric care for all neurosurgical patients undergoing treatment here. It will cater to patients of all types of Brain & Spine related diseases from Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh, adjoining areas of Bihar and Nepal.

VISION

The department’s vision is to ensure the highest standard of neurosurgical care, giving every patient the best health care and management. We want to pursue in establishing the best neurosurgical education and training centre as per the best institutes of India. We want to develop the infrastructure so that we can ensure that all type of Neurosurgical cases can be operated here and patients do not have to get referred from here.

MISSION

We want to grow the department in different phases:

1^st Phase: Starting Emergency services, OPD services, IPD services and O.T. services

This phase has been initiated and is currently in action. We have 15 Bedded Neurosurgery IPD,24X7 Emergency Services along with all week OPD services and Elective O.T.’s. Initial procurement has been done, now add on procurement is being done through Tender and CSR. Training of Nursing staff for wards and O.T.’s. We have started Sub-speciality OPD’s which is Spine Clinic, Brain and Spine Tumour Clinic and Paediatric Neurosurgery Clinics.

2^nd Phase: Starting Neurosurgery M.Ch. course, play part in starting Neuro-anaesthesia PDF course, increase OT days to 4 elective O.T.’s per week. To begin 5 Bedded Neurosurgery ICU initially with SICU, then independently proceed to 10 Bedded dedicated Neurosurgery ICU. Initiation of Skull Base, Endovascular and Minimal Invasive Cranial and Spinal Neurosurgical Procedures. Procurement to begin for 2^nd Phase for additional armamentarium with latest gadgets. 

3^rd Phase: As our team becomes strong, we will like to increase our beds to 50 along with 10 bedded Neurosurgery ICU’s, all week elective OT’s. We would like to start complex neurosurgical procedures, along with developing further infrastructure for Endovascular Suite, Multiple Hybrid dedicated Neurosurgery O.T.’s. We can start Fellowship in various Neurosurgical Sub-specialities. We can initiate planning for further expansion like establishing Gamma Knife Surgery centre. Procurement will be so that we match the global standards of Neurosurgery and follow the footpath laid by AIIMS, Delhi.
