INTRODUCTION
The Department of Physiology has been established to undertake undergraduate and post graduate teaching and training. The teaching and learning methodology for the undergraduates includes didactic lecture classes, practical classes, case based learning, tutorials and weekly interactive student seminars. Also, we have initiated to implement Integrated teaching in the undergraduate teaching schedule involving both horizontal and vertical integration this year, with fair success. We have also started Early clinical exposure for undergraduates, in an attempt to provide better understanding of the basic sciences through a clinical context. Objective Structured Practical Examinations form integral part of the practical assessments. Physiology Quiz and student seminar contests were organized for the undergraduates to foster learning and encouragement. Since the beginning of COVID-19 outbreak, live online lectures and practicals are regularly being conducted for the students. Online internal assessment exam was successfully conducted.
FACILITIES
Department has excellent demonstration rooms, lecture theatres, undergraduate laboratories and research laboratories which are well equipped (airconditioned, with internet connections and modern teaching tools).
Neurophysiology laboratory
Department of Physiology
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur
Department of Physiology, AIIMS Gorakhpur has initiated neurodiagnostic services in October 2021 (at Neurophysiology Laboratory). The tests/ investigations include Nerve conduction studies, Electromyography and Evoked potential studies. Extensive referral of patients from various departments has been our success and inspiration since then.
We have succeeded in conducting and reporting about 200 tests since the inception of the services. Some of the noteworthy referrals which have constituted major part of our services to date are those of infants and children for hearing screening and visual function evaluation [by Brainstem auditory evoked potential tests (ABER) and VEP], electrophysiological assessment of visual function in optic neuritis, traumatic optic neuropathies, investigating and monitoring toxic optic neuropathies and so forth. Nerve conduction studies have been extensively reported in various conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathies, brachial plexopathies, radiculopathies, diabetic neuropathies and in several other conditions where the tests are helpful in supporting/confirming the diagnosis and planning the treatment. Apart from contributing to the clinical services, the laboratory is serving to contribute in the field of research with two projects (one funded) ongoing.
We hope to extend our services further. With installation of additional neurodiagnostic equipments in the near future, more advanced and comprehensive services by the department are anticipated.
GOALS
We aim to prepare and equip the department for post-graduate teaching. We aim at establishing clinical laboratories including Neurophysiology, Cardiorespiratory laboratories and other clinical laboratories for contributing to the patient care, clinical services and for research studies.
