INTRODUCTION

The Department of General Surgery is committed to providing the highest quality of medical care to patients, world class education for students and continuing innovative basic science and clinical research. It is one of the first departments to start its OPD services from the very first day AIIMS Gorakhpur started in February 2019. As AIIMS Gorakhpur caters a large population of Purvanchal part of Uttar Pradesh and adjoining area of Bihar, the Surgery OPD is one of the busiest amongst all. OPD started with about 50 patients per day in March 2019 and crossed 200 patients per day within a year.

FACILITIES

Apart from OPD services a treatment room and a Minor OT was developed for dressings, suturing and few cases under local anaesthesia. A Day care surgery unit was started in February 2020 once the faculty from department of anaesthesia joined the institute. Patients are admitted in the morning for surgery and is discharged by evening. Elective cases like breast lumps, hernias, excision biopsies are being performed.

1-Every Tuesday 2 PM-4 PM:– Breast clinic consultant in-charge- Dr. Gaurav Gupta, started on 06/01/2020.

2-Every Friday 2PM-4 PM:– Gastro intestinal surgery clinic consultant incharge- Dr. Ravi Gupta, started on 31/12/2021.

SERVICES UNDER SPECIALITY CLINIC

Breast Clinic:- In breast clinic we are providing services to a variety of patients suffering from benign breast disease like- Mastalgia, Fibroadenoma, Fibroadenosis, breast abscess as well as malignant breast disease we provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Gastrointestinal surgery clinic:- This speciality clinic has been started for the patients having surgical disease related to GI system which include; Disease of Gall bladder, Liver, Pancreas, Colon, Rectum & Upper GI.

GOALS

Main objectives are to create an excellent academic and education milieu for providing a platform for development of quality services, teaching and research. We aim to achieve an epitome of quality in medical education delivering and training system and to render quality patient care.

Currently department is running OPD services, IPD & O.T services along with 2 speciality clinics. General surgery department is one of the busiest departments at AIIMS Gorakhpur. Daily OPD of about more than 200 patients.

We are also having departmental Academic meet once a week.

Soon MS General Surgery will start in the department which will further upgrade the department.

FUTURE VISION

The department is planning to start speciality clinics, IPD and Emergency services by the year end. All the major and laparoscopic surgeries will start simultaneously. Department plans to start post-graduation courses (MS) in General Surgery on completion of three years OR as soon as permission is granted. The department’s futuristic plans include procurement of laparoscopic simulators, a well-established skill lab and to start robotic and bariatric surgeries. This incorporation and implementation of newer technology in teaching, learning and evaluation will result in making of globally competitive, competent and confident surgeons, who will engage in ethical practice of the science and art of surgery.

With a vision of becoming world-class leading institution, department of surgery promises to professionally train both undergraduate and postgraduate students with highest quality of skill through innovative and methodological teaching in most sophisticated and modest way. 

OTHER INFORMATION

Teaching :-

First undergraduate batch joined in August 2019 and revised MBBS curriculum was initiated under the guidance of mentor institute AIIMS Jodhpur. Early clinical exposure for the first MBBS batch was initiated and the students were sent to OPD in batches for clinical teaching. Integrated teaching schedules were started in which faculty of surgery started taking lectures on related topics of integration with Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry.

Research :-

Short term studentship (STS) ICMR projects have been started by the faculty members as guides and co guides for UG students. Intramural projects have been initiated by the department and few Extramural projects are already planned to be started shortly.
